Most common plastic surgery procedures

Plastic surgery is increasingly popular all over the world. The number of procedures done increases every year and no signs of deceleration emerge.

There are two types of plastic surgery patients: the ones who always wanted it, and the ones who only realize the need for plastic surgery at a certain point in their lives.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of procedures in the United States in 2014 rose 3%, with a total of 16.5 million surgeries performed.

Although some surgeries see increased popularity from year to year, other procedures are always on trend. The most common procedures are: liposuction, breast augmentation, nose reshaping (also known as “nose job”), abdominoplasty (commonly known as “tummy tuck”), and facelift.

Weight-loss surgeries are also on the rise due to obesity, which is a global issue. After weight-loss surgeries, many patients want plastic surgery to correct the sagging and excess skin. Only after the complete weight-loss period the person should look for plastic surgery, as the weight must be stabilized. The reshaping surgeries are abdominoplasty, breast lift, upper arm lift, and tight lift. These surgeries are beneficial both for the psychological and physical wellness of the patient.

Recurring to plastic surgery is no longer only accessible to wealthy people, it is widely available all over the world. Some prefer to do it at a local hospital or clinic and others prefer to do plastic surgery abroad. Those who decide to have a surgery abroad do so because they are looking for the expertise of a well-known practitioner or hospital reputation, for money saving reasons, and even for privacy concerns. To decide where to have your plastic surgery done, three variables need to be taken into consideration: the expertise of the doctor – that needs to have a specialization in plastic surgery, the quality of the materials used in the surgery, namely the implants, and the safety of the environment where the surgery is going to be performed. The price of the surgery is conditioned by these three variables, so take care when the prices are very very low – some things might have been cut. In Portugal, plastic surgery is a common practice and the Portuguese plastic surgeons are known for their skill and experience.

Medical Port offers surgery options in hospital context in various procedures like breast augmentation, liposuction or facelift. If you like to know more about plastic surgery abroad, contact us.

Breast reduction and breast lift surgery

Breast size can affect women in various ways, whether they are too big or too small for comfort.

We have previously discussed about breast augmentation for women who feel their breasts are too small. Now we will discuss when women have such big breasts that interfere with a normal life. These women are often diagnosed with macromastia and opt for a breast reduction surgery. In many cases, big breasts means suffering from discomfort or back pain.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast hypertrophy or macromastia is the increase in volume and weight of breast tissue more than the normal in women.

The effects of big and heavy breasts include muscular pain in the neck, shoulders, and back. Rashes and skin inflammation can occur in the submammary region or cleavage area. And it can impact daily activities like practice exercise or even find a comfortable position to sleep.

It is genetically common for women to have large breasts, often intensified with pregnancy or weight gain. Before a breast reduction surgery and for better results, doctors sometimes ask their patients to lose weight. Sometimes women also have asymmetric breasts – being one breast much bigger or smaller than the other – and the breast reduction surgery also entails the correction of the symmetry.

Associated with the breast reduction surgery in many cases there is the breast lift procedure. Both are done to alter the shape of the breast. Breast lift consists of raising the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. It improves the appearance of sagging breasts. The goal is to improve the shape of the breast while minimizing visible scars. This surgery is also known as mastopexy. For some women, after a considerable weight loss, their breasts also appear too big for their bodies. In those cases, a breast reduction surgery might not be the solution, but a breast lift surgery might.

Breast augmentation and breast lift surgery

Many women around the globe who feel uncomfortable in their bodies look for alternatives to boost their confidence and improve self-esteem. After careful consideration, thought and research plastic surgery is often the answer. One of the areas of major concern in a women’s body is the look and size of their breasts. Many wish for fuller breasts while others wished theirs were smaller.

For those who would like their breasts to appear bigger, the most common procedure is breast augmentation. Plastic surgeons concerns’ in all cases is to minimize the appearance of the scar and maximize the cosmetic benefits while introducing the breast implants. The dominant trend is to perform the surgery with a minimal incision to limit surgical consequences and facilitate a faster recovery.

Breast lift is another procedure that many times is chosen by women to improve their look. It’s not about to have bigger breasts but to have firmer ones. Breast lift consists of raising the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. It improves the appearance of sagging breasts. The goal is to improve the shape of the breast while minimizing visible scars. This surgery is also known as mastopexy.

Statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show that breast lift procedures have grown 70% since 2000, outperforming breast implants by 2 to 1.

These procedures have different purposes and different results too. A breast lift is a procedure that will tighten the tissue and give the breasts a younger look. Often times a women’s breast loses its youthful shape and firmness due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, aging, gravity and heredity. Women who opt for breast lift may only want their breasts to appear younger and firmer and not bigger. While the ones who opt for breast augmentation are looking to increase their cup size and have fuller breasts.

Breast Augmentation (Breast Implant)

Augmentation of the breast, or breast implant, consists of insertion of a silicone bag (prosthesis) under the breast (submammary) or under the breast and chest muscle (subpectoral) and then filling the bag with saline (salt water).

This prosthesis expands the breast area to give a fuller breast (increased cup size), give a better contour, and give more cleavage.

The incision (cut) may be placed at various locations such as: under the breast at the breast fold; periareolar which is at the edge of the areola (brown area consisting of nipple and areola); within the areola; in the armpit (axillary); or in the umbilical area.

The thinnest scar is usually in the areola. The umbilical incision approach is used with an endoscope (tube with a light for visualization and placement of the breast implant).

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

A tummy tuck is suitable for both men and women who are in good general health overall.

It should not be confused with a liposuction (the cosmetic surgery used to remove fat deposits), although your surgeon may elect to perform liposuction as part of a tummy tuck.

Women who have muscles and skin stretched by multiple pregnancies may find the procedure useful to tighten those muscles and reduce that skin. A tummy tuck is also an alternative for men or women who were obese at one point in their lives and still have excessive fat deposits or loose skin in the abdominal area.
