The possibility of ever achieving a disease-free world was debated, but the opinion was clear: the majority of the attendees agreed it is quite utopic to ever achieve of such thing, despite the great advances of science.

Longevity was also discussed: could 125 be the new 80 in the future? Maybe, according to Gabriel Otte, who runs an enterprise working on disease prevention. Unfortunately, not all can be controlled by us, as the key seems to lie on a combination of genetics and lifestyle effects. However, Gabriel Otte recommends us to be as proactive about out general health as most people are with their teeth – checking it regularly and focusing on prevention.

How to look younger without plastic surgery

In order to feel and look young there are several procedures available nowadays, some of them are more effective and permanent than others. Not all of them include going under the knife and suffer from slow and painful recoveries.

Dermal fillers are an example of how to look younger in a quick and almost painless way.

As time passes by, skin loses it fill and becomes saggy and wrinkles appear. Hyaluronic acid is a natural ingredient present in the skin matrix that tends to get lost over time. Its production lowers as we age. One of the ways to convey a more young looking skin is to give hyaluronic acid back to the skin, in order to restore its hydration, elasticity and filing.

Hyaluronic acid fillers are an affordable and less invasive option than a facelift or other plastic surgery procedure. Through the injection of hyaluronic acid into the skin, the appearance of wrinkles is smooth and less visible, as the injection is made directly into the desired area. Hyaluronic acid injections reduce effectively the visible signs of volume loss, giving the skin a natural look after the treatment.

Restylane is one of the most reputable brands of hyaluronic acid injections trusted by people all over the world. Restylane is available in Europe since 1996, in Canada since 1998 and in the United States since 2003. It is available in 60 countries worldwide.

Restylane can be used in the following areas:

  • Frown lines (glabellar lines)
  • Crow’s feet (periorbital lines)
  • Tear troughs (tired eyes)
  • Nose to mouth lines (nasolabial folds)
  • Sad mouth lines (oral commissures)
  • Small lines around the mouth (perioral area)
  • Mouth to chin lines (marionette lines)

Restylane is a crystalline gel injected into the skin with the purpose of increasing its volume and recovering the main traits of the face’s structure. Similar to the hyaluronic acid present in our body, because of its non-animal origin, it does not involve the risk of associated allergies and hyper-sensibility of the skin. Treatment with Restylane doesn’t affect the facial expression and its effects can be seen immediately. Free muscle movements are maintained while the treatment lasts.

Results last for a while but are not permanent, a new maintenance treatment maybe necessary 6 to 12 months after the previous application.

Any esthetic treatment should be supervised by a health professional and with the care of a physician, especially when the procedure is done abroad. Medical Port guarantees that during the treatment there is an ongoing care from Hospital Lusiadas that allows for the patient to be certain that will receive the best care and will have the best results.

Medical Tourism is a growing trend among Americans

Every year it is estimated that more than 750, 000 American residents travel outside the country to seek medical care abroad, according an article of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The choice of travelling outside the country of residence for medical care can be for several reasons. Some decide based on price, based on the reputation of the doctor, the reputation of the hospital facilities, the geographic proximity, or particular connection to the country. The article adds: “The most common procedures that people undergo on medical tourism trips include cosmetic surgery, dentistry, and heart surgery.”

A common concern among those who travel for medical care is safety. The role of those who plan and organize medical care abroad, like a medical tourism facilitator, is to ensure people receive the best medical care.

Maintain a clear communication is essential to keep the client confident.

One of the ways to ensure the medical care is safe, and follows international standards is the international accreditation from Joint Commission International. This organization has been accrediting hospitals all over the world since 1994 to ensure consistency, safety and standard rules for medical care. Hospitals and clinics that receive this accreditation follow and maintain strict standards for patient safety, minimizing the risks of medical procedures. A JCI seal of approval means the patient will return home the best way possible in the least amount of time.

Medical Port partnered Hospital Lusíadas Porto and Hospital Lusíadas Lisboa that are accredited by Joint Commission International.

This partnership is a guarantee that our clients will receive the best care they need and the course of their treatment is under the supervision of top professionals. The international accreditation by JCI ensures that patients will be treated with the same quality standards, as they were back home in the United States, in a welcoming and private environment.

5 health benefits of mindfulness

Mindfulness meditation refers to the ability that we have of being in the here and now, completely aware of everything we are experiencing both inside ourselves and around us. Training your mind to be aware can provide several benefits for your health and your life in general.

Here are 5 benefits from practicing mindfulness meditation:

Be more focused

Mindfulness is about here and now. Is about focusing in the present and to evaluate it looking for positive outcomes. One of the ways to start practicing mindfulness is to focus on one task at the time. Focus solely on what you are doing and how you are doing it, learn and evaluate all the steps. And achieve a greater focus on everything you do.

Reduce stress

By becoming more aware of your own thoughts and knowing how to control them, you can reduce anxiety. People often get stressed when they feel they aren’t in control of things. So, controlling your mind and direct it towards positive thoughts can help reduce stress.

Make better decisions

After a mindfulness training you will have a choice to stop reacting automatically, give yourself time to think, know how to focus your attention and to remove the negative thoughts. This will lead to better decision-making, as your mind will allow you to take a pause and choose how you react.

Sleep better

Mediation is also known for relaxation, which can lead people to get to sleep quicker and sleep better. With the current practice of mindfulness it is possible to become more aware of the surroundings and to be able to relax and fall asleep faster and sleep better.

Become physically healthier

Recent studies have shown the benefits of mindfulness can be seen at the physical health level like treating heart disease, lower blood pressure or reduce chronic pain. Aligning your mind and your body to achieve a positive outcome can be a very powerful tool.

Improve your health and your life with mindfulness techniques

Mindfulness refers to the ability that we have of being in the here and now, completely aware of everything we are experiencing both inside ourselves and around us. We develop this attitude by deliberately choosing to focus on the things that we usually do not pay attention to.

Mindfulness is being advocated by personalities from all the spheres of the society around the world: physicians, celebrities, politicians, sports players and C-level managers. Also referred as meditation, this technique aims to improve people’s lives by becoming more aware of the world around them, more focused, and to make better decisions everyday.

On the long term, mindfulness practice will foster the development of brain areas responsible for the integration of emotion and thought, as well as for self-awareness. These changes will help you perform better at decision making and dealing with emotional challenges.

Through systematic practice of mindfulness you will also be able to strengthen and develop new self-regulating and control strategies as you will learn how to relax and simultaneously be aware of what might be disturbing you, without losing sight of what really matters to you at any time.

Mindfulness can improve your life by: changing the way your brain works, teaching it a whole new way of functioning with more clarity, a more relaxed attention and a better control over your behavior and your personal choices.

Learning how to practice mindfulness can be hard since most people are not used to enter in the state of meditation, but these kinds of techniques can be taught with the help of professionals. Medical Port partnered with Oficina da Piscologia and developed special mindfulness programs that help you achieve the results you need in your life. Whether it is to lose weight, be more focused at work, sleep better or have a healthier lifestyle. Learn more about our mindfulness program here.
